Miters

We will practice four mitering techniques in this class. Learn an easy way to miter borders on your quilt – even multiple borders can be treated as one! We’ll do two different methods of mitering corners on bindings, and learn to finish off the ends of one of those bindings with a mitered seam so no one will know where you began and ended. Bring a project to work on if you have one at the right stage, or work on practice pieces only. All levels.

Supplies Required for Course

We will practice mitering corners on borders, and two methods of mitering bindings.

For borders:

Bring one square or rectangle of muslin (15” – 18”) or any fabric that marks will easily show on.
Bring four strips for borders. Make them about 2 ˝” to 3” wide and about 8” longer than the sides of your square. If you want to challenge yourself more, you may sew two strips together lengthwise as if it were a double border.

For bindings:

Bring two approximately 12” square fabric sandwiches to practice on. Muslin or another plain fabric works well. They may be quilted or not. Machine baste 1/8” from the outside edges.
Bring 2” strips cut for bindings.
For one sandwich, piece enough strips together (on the diagonal) to go around the whole sandwich with 12” extra.
For the other sandwich, you need four separate strips, each 3” longer than the side it will bind.

You will also need:

Sewing machine in good working order, with walking foot Extra needles
Thread
Rotary cutter, rulers (one square, one long)
Clips (hair type) to hold bindings in place for sewing
Hand sewing supplies
Basic machine sewing supplies
Fine permanent marker or pencils which will show up well on your fabrics

I will provide “Janet’s template” for you
