We will make practice pieces only. Most quilting will be free motion using a darning foot with feed dogs down. We will make few marks on top of the quilt sandwiches.

Fabric “sandwiches” – Bring 12 – 15, 12” square or larger. Use cotton batting, not polyester, for best results. Muslin or any solid fabric is fine for the top and back of your sandwich. It is not necessary to baste these practice pieces. For a real project, you should pin baste or use quilter’s spray. Do not hand baste when you are machine quilting, as the threads will get caught in your quilting foot.

-Sewing machine in good working order, cleaned and oiled. Bring the instruction book, also.
-Extension table for your machine (you cannot quilt on just the free arm). If you do not have an extension table, bring books and/or magazines that you can place around your free arm to make it a flatbed
-Darning or quilting foot.
-Walking foot.
-Basic sewing supplies, including tweezers.
-Children’s rounded point scissors (I use Fiskars, but not the pre-school variety – the ones with slightly more pointed tips. Do not purchase the ones with the rubbery handles. They’ll stick to your fingers when you want to drop them!)
-Paper and pencil for doodling
-Fine permanent marker
-Water soluble marker
-Thread: good quality regular sewing thread will be fine. Do not buy bargain threads, as they usually are made up of shorter strands, break more easily and deposit more lint in your machine. You may try invisible thread (YLI or other very fine thread, .004 weight) if you wish, in the top or bobbin. If you use thread that matches your fabric, you will not see your mistakes. If you use contrasting threads you will see everything! (This is also easier for me to see how you are doing.) Please bring contrasting threads for the top and bobbin so we can adjust your tension, if necessary, at the beginning of the class.
-Bobbins: bring extra for contrasting or invisible thread.
-Needles: I like Schmetz topstitch (expensive, but easy to thread), quilting, or microtex needles, size 80/12 or 70/10. The smaller the needle, the smaller the hole it makes in your quilt.
-Stiletto or large needle (like a darning needle) or pin.

. -Quilter’s gloves or rubber fingertips, if you have them and like them. I use non-skid drawer lining material, which I will provide for everyone.

I will also provide freezer paper and waxed paper.
