Dimensional Flying Geese Table Runner

Make dimensional geese, set them in a wild goose chase format into a three or four block table runner with pointed ends. You may use five fabrics only, or make the geese scrappy, as I did. You will learn how to miter borders and bindings at corners that aren’t square.

Three Block Table Runner – 21” x 64”
Class List

A note about fabric choices:

I used three values of fabric in my table runner – light background, medium “sky” (behind the “geese”) and dark geese and border. Note also the large size of the flowers and leaves in the border print. The background fabric is a medium sized print and smaller prints are used for the “geese” and “sky” fabrics. The size of the print is called scale. We all want beautiful color in our quilts, but quilts have more visual impact if we also pay attention to choosing fabrics that have a variety of values and scales.

For this four block table runner, I began with a “focus” fabric, and color coordinated all other fabrics to that. My focus fabric was the large scale, dark red floral print that I used as a border. One of the easiest ways to choose fabric is to start with one you love, and choose others that pick up the colors of the first. But remember to vary the values and the scales!

Materials

1 yard of focus fabric (for block centers and outside border)
¾ yard background fabric
¼ yard inner border
5/8 yard for “geese” (or see below for scrappy look)
½ yard for “sky” (or see below for scrappy look)
1 ¼ yard backing for large table runner or 1 yard backing for smaller runner batting to fit your project
Thread to blend with fabrics

Equipment

Basic sewing supplies
Machine with ¼” foot
Rotary cutter, mat and rulers (a long one and a 12 ½” square one)

Please cut the “goose” rectangles and the “sky” squares before coming to class. The first number refers to the four block runner, while the number following in parentheses refers to the three block runner.

From “geese” fabric, cut three (two) 5 ½” strips. Cut into 5 ½” x 3” rectangles. Make 32 (24).
Or cut from scraps.

From “sky” fabric, cut five (four) 3” strips. Cut into 3” squares. Make 64 (48).
Or cut from scraps.
