Circle Play
Do you have some fantastic fabrics in your stash that are just too beautiful to cut? Or you just don’t know what to do with them? Circle Play might be the answer. Circles are cut from those fabrics and appliquéd onto simply pieced background squares. Then the squares are placed so that values are connected and flow through the quilt. Book Circle Play by Reynola Pakusich is required.

Circle PlayJanet Root 585-659-2877 kroot14@rochester.rr.com Book required: Circle Play by Reynola Pakusich, C & T Publishing Fabrics for this quilt can be some of the wonderful fabrics you have purchased and just can’t cut into! For your first quilt in this style, it may be easier to cut all your circles from the same fabric. Please purchase the book and read at least the beginning section on fabric selection to help you in your fabric choices. The construction techniques are simple, but the final results are stunning because of your choice of fabrics with their different characteristics. For circles with one fabric only, choose a fabric with these guidelines in mind.
1. Scale – are there both small and large motifs? It will take ½ yard of fabric to make 9 circles. Purchase more fabric for a larger quilt. Background fabrics: Choose fabrics with colors that blend with your circle fabric. These colors do not have to be exact matches to the colors in your focus fabric. Choose fabrics that encompass a full range of values from light to dark. The value change in your supporting fabric should not be as great as the value change in your focus fabric. Choose fabrics with different textures – shapes and lines. Don’t be afraid to include ethnic or animal prints. My second quilt contains a fabric with lighthouses, and they are turned sideways! Fat quarters or smaller pieces will work for the backgrounds. Bring lots!
